Bits of Being

thoughts on life, faith, family….and, yes, just learning to "be"

To Jesus On Easter

You came into a world where everyone thought God needed to be appeased.

To please God, you must sacrifice.

To get close to God, you must work hard.

To make God love you, you must earn it.

To be accepted into heaven, here’s a list of rules to follow.

You came to get rid of these misconceptions.

You came to be our friend.

You came to love us in our sin, and out of our sin.

You came to forgive us before we even asked.

You sacrificed for us, instead of us sacrificing for you.

You even ripped the curtain in two.

The curtain that kept us from approaching you.

The curtain that kept us at a safe distance.

The curtain of our fear.

The curtain of our shame.

The curtain that we created.

We say you died on the cross for our sins, but what does this mean?

Perhaps it was you showing us how we treat sin.

We condemn it.

We shame the sinner.

We hate the sinner.

We judge.

We kill.

We crucify.

We think sin must be punished.

We think mercy is not fair.

And we took it out on you; you who had no sin.

How many others have we falsely accused?

But you took it.

You took our judgments and our accusations.

You bore our wrath.

You gave your life.

We say you died and rose again for each one of us, but what does this mean?

Perhaps it was you showing us how you treat sin.

You resurrect it.

You beautify it.

You turn it around.

You redeem it.

You bring something good out of it.

You make it new.

What we mean for evil, you mean for salvation.

This is the mystery.

This is giving up life for love.

This is bringing heaven to earth.

This is good.

This is You. This is God.
