Jesus dies on the Cross

Matthew 27:50 (RSV)  “And Jesus cried again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit.”

This was God. God in our wounds. God in our pain. God on the cross. Approachable. Vulnerable. Available. Obtainable. God yielding to us. God yielding to suffering. God yielding to death.

This was new. Reformation through surrender. Revolution through relinquishment. Transformation through death. A new cycle of living and dying and living again had begun.

This was it. The powerful couldn’t touch him, because what can they do with someone who lays his power down? The successful couldn’t touch him, because what can they do with someone who’s not trying to climb up their ladder? The lawful couldn’t touch him, because what could they do with someone who lives by a different law? He lived outside of their systems. And now he died outside of their systems. And soon he would live again, in a whole new domain which had nothing to do with their systems. It was finished.

Colossians 1:19-20 “God was pleased that all His fullness should forever dwell in the Son, who, as predetermined by God, bled peace into the world by His death on the cross as God’s means of reconciling to Himself the whole creation – all things in heaven and all things on earth.”
