The Road To Edmond

Starring Tripp Fuller and Nathanael Welch

So, I branched out a little and decided to review a movie today. And I’m having a little bit of a hard time with this review. On the one hand, the movie was entertaining, funny, and brought up some controversial subjects that need to be talked about in churches and among Christians. These subjects included, but were not limited to, sexuality, the character of God, the role of the church, and even drugs. Though some of the humor was crude, the movie made some very funny biblical and churchy references. It definitely was not your typical Christian movie (which I consider a good thing) and showed people dealing with faith in very raw and real ways.

On the other hand, the plot was very difficult to follow. It was hard to catch all the nuances, and I found myself straining to figure out what was going on for much of the movie. The acting was also poorly done. I found myself wishing these important topics could be brought up in a more compelling manner. Can we learn how to bring up contentious subjects in non-offensive ways? Can we draw others in instead of turning them away? Can we captivate people with authenticity instead of shocking them with sacrilege?

I think we can. And perhaps that was also the intention of the producers of The Road To Edmond. For, at its essence, what I believe the movie was trying to say was, “God is throwing a party…and ALL are invited!” And that is the message we need to shout. That is the message this movie is shouting. The party is for ALL!
