A novel by Steven Case
You can’t help but smile when you open the pages of this book. Or perhaps the smiling begins when you see the cover: God the Father, Jesus, and an angel named Abigail. This book creates a very lighthearted, whimsical look at heaven (Saint Peter’s even at the gate), the relationship of the Father and the Son (bantering back and forth as they play basketball and drink Snapple), and a new arrival in heaven, the angel Abigail (yes, we know you don’t believe humans become angels, but this is a novel…go with it!).
Amidst the playful tone of this book lies an underlying message that is profound, intriguing, and stretching to my rigid faith. It is a story of grace, of second chances, and of transformation. But mostly grace. The author shows a side of God that is loving, kind, welcoming, and friendly. God is so approachable and accepting in this story, helping to chip away some of my remaining fears of God as a severe judge.
As the author draws us into the story through the interesting characters he creates, he then begins to weave in the questions we all have asked. Where is God in my pain? How can God let such bad things happen on the earth? Why is life so disappointing? Doesn’t God care? Why doesn’t God intervene?
All of us want answers to these questions, and though this book won’t give you the answers, it may help you to think about these questions in a new way, giving you possible answers to ponder. Perhaps God is working in more ways than we can see. Perhaps there is some purpose behind tragedy. Perhaps God is not to blame for the bad things happening in our world. Perhaps God is right here, right now, not making it all better but making it all count. Perhaps God really does care. Perhaps God does really love … me.
