Ann J. Temkin’s book, Sight in the Sandstorm, Jesus in His World and Mine, is part personal memoir and part biblical storytelling. Ann creatively weaves bits of her background growing up as a half-Jewish child into a Catholic nun and a Protestant minister with the story of Jesus and his message of tearing down fences of exclusion in order for all to feel welcomed into a relationship with God.
At times, I found the book disjointed, having difficulty finding the connections between modern times and ancient Palestine. At other times, the stories were heartwarming, bringing sadness and thoughtfulness and smiles. The stories invite all to come and join God’s story, walking together through the “sandstorms and bright blue skies.” Ann’s words painted a beautiful and enticing picture of God. “But light is like the wind. It comes, it moves, it goes where It will. To follow is the journey.”
The book was also challenging, helping me to see the gospel stories in new ways and finding Ann’s life something to aspire to. Ann shared from her heart. “Being authentic is difficult….makes many others uncomfortable, even frightened…it can be dangerous.”. Thank you, Ann, for risking authenticity for us, your readers.
