Bethlehem wasn’t anything special.
It wasn’t on a tourist map,
Not a popular travel destination,
Nor a traveler’s Mecca,
Nor a place for the high and mighty.
No, it was out-of-the-way,
Small town,
Boring,
Poor.
And the stable certainly wasn’t significant.
It wasn’t a local community center,
Not a place where people gathered,
Nor a place where anyone lived,
Nor a holy place.
No, it was a hole-in-the wall,
A drafty barn,
Smelly,
Dark.
But this is where heaven met earth.
A place where strangers met,
Where God met strangers,
Where the innocent met the dirty,
Where the wise met the ignorant.
To show God’s welcome,
God’s humility,
And love,
For all.
Matthew 2:6
‘And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are not in any way least among the leaders of Judah;
For from you shall come a Ruler
Who will shepherd My people Israel.’
