So, I wrote a little poem today with bits and pieces of many different Christmas carols used within its lines. Can you identify from which carols I unearthed these words and phrases?
Comfort, comfort, O my people,
Speak of peace, now, from each steeple.
Comfort those who sit in darkness,
Mourning ‘neath affliction’s starkness.
Speak unto Jerusalem
Of the peace that waits for them.
Tell of all the sins I cover,
And that warfare now is over.
Glory be to God the Lord,
Forevermore You are adored.
Justice shall guard Your throne above
And peace abound in truth and love.
May envy, strife, and quarrels cease
Filling the world with heaven’s peace,
Binding people in one mind,
Bringing hope to humankind.
Yet in despair I bow my head,
“There is no peace on earth,” I said.
“For hate is strong, and mocks the song
Of peace on earth defeating wrong.”
Still through the cloven skies they come
With peaceful wings, a harp and drum.
O hush the noise and cease your strife
And hear the angels sing of life.
Above the earth their music floats,
The angels sing with many notes:
His law is love; his gospel’s peace.
The weary world does now increase
With peace on earth and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconciled.
And warring humankind now hears
The heavenly peace fall on our ears.
So now, oh world, send back the song
The angels sing so wide and long.
The news from heaven’s gracious King
Is yours with ancient splendors to bring.
Come kneel before this radiant boy
Who brings you beauty, peace, and joy!
And spread the ancient sacred call
Of peace on earth, goodwill to all.
