Bits of Being

thoughts on life, faith, family….and, yes, just learning to "be"

Advent 2020-Day 15 Letting Go

= 462

I love making lists. I can make a list for just about anything: chore lists, reading lists, vacation lists, daily to-do lists, gifts lists, attendance lists, rules lists, and even how-to-follow Jesus lists. Lists are okay. Lists can be fun. Sometimes they are helpful, and sometimes they’re very much needed. Even so, there are some days when I need to let go of the lists. Tear them up. Erase them. LET THEM GO. Today’s word(s): LETTING GO.

Some days are not made for following lists. We need to stop and listen to an inner voice. We need to relax and put our feet up. We need to be spontaneous. We need to live in the moment and not for the next thing on our to-do list. Some of you may naturally be able to do this easily, but for some of us, this is incredibly difficult. It’s a matter of LETTING GO of our control over situations and accepting what is in the moment. Mary did this so well when she said, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.”

So, today, here is a list (haha….I know, I know) of things to get you started on living in the moment, LETTING GO of your lists and relaxing into today:

1-Grab a mug of hot chocolate, sit on your favorite comfy chair and just look at the Christmas lights on your tree.

2-Take a warm bath with the lights down and your favorite fragrance permeating the room

3-Close your eyes and listen to your favorite Christmas song

4-Sit down and watch that Christmas movie you haven’t taken time to watch in years…doing nothing else but sitting and watching

5-Go on a walk, warmly greeting anyone who crosses your path

6-Sit and listen to your child the next time they are sharing with you. Really: stop what you are doing, look at their face, and listen!

7-Step out on your deck, grab the hand of a loved one, and just observe with all your senses

8-Open your Bible to Luke 1 and read it in a translation you’ve never read before

9- It’s okay to cry…or laugh…or dance

10-Breathe, meditate, pray…just be…here in this moment…now…free

Psalm 46:10 “Be still, be calm, see, and understand I am the True God.” (The Voice) “Step out of the traffic! Take a long, loving look at me, your High God, above politics, above everything.” (The Message)
