Welcome, all wonders in one sight!
Eternity shut in a span;
Summer in winter; day in night;
Heaven in earth, and God in man.
Great little one, whose all-embracing birth
Lifts earth to heaven, stoops heaven to earth. By Richard Crenshaw
This moment I have been longing for with great anticipation, is finally here. This is me, your God, all-vulnerable. This is me, the One, self-emptying. This is me, Jesus, loving all.
This is me, welcoming you. This is me, giving lavishly and humbly. This is me, redeeming ahead of time. This is me, restoring always.
This is me, saving you, Saving you from wrong thoughts, Saving you from wrong ideas, Saving you from distance and disconnection.
You thought I was sitting on a throne far above you, but I am right here. You thought I would send an ambassador, but I am sending myself. You thought you needed a mediator, but you can face me. You thought you had to work your way to me, but this is me coming to you.
You thought you couldn’t be God-bearers, but you always have been. You thought I had chosen some, but I am here for all. You thought I wanted the advantages of my status, but I wanted humanity. You thought I wanted my privileged position, but I wanted you.
I chose an animal barn because I honor all. I chose the cows’ feeding trough because I make all things clean. I chose a pregnant teenager because all can bring God to the world. I chose a poor man from Nazareth because I see the light in all.
I chose a foreigner from the East because all can see the mystery. I chose a night shift worker because all can hear the message, My message of God in a manger, My message of good news of great joy for all.
You’ve been trying to convince me to change my mind about you. But, now you know, it’s you who need to change your mind about me. This incarnation is redemption. This Christmas is salvation.
Jesus gives us true knowledge of God because he reveals the true nature of God, which is self-giving. (Mulhern)
